Listening: the first step toward a loving conversation
Make room for your spouse’s words before preparing your answer.
Listen before answering
In a conversation, it is easy to prepare an answer while the other person is still speaking. Listening means trying to understand the feeling, concern, and intention behind the words. James 1:19 encourages readiness to listen and care in speaking. That posture can shape the way we talk at home.
Check your understanding
Ask, “Have I understood what troubled you?” or “Could you explain what matters most to you here?” These questions leave room to clarify a misunderstanding. The aim is to understand one another more deeply.
Make space for conversation
Choose a time when both of you can pay attention. Put the phone aside and let each person finish. If the discussion becomes tense, agree on a pause and a clear time to return. A helpful pause keeps the way back to conversation open.
Try one small step
Set aside ten minutes to hear about your spouse’s week. Listen without offering a solution, ask one clarifying question, and briefly reflect what you heard. Love is also expressed through daily attention and presence.
